John Highstreet's Carpentry

As Summer moved into Fall, I grappled with the economy and managed to fall into a fortunate situation. Here is a project that allowed me to work with a fantastic client who couldn't have been more supportive of my vision, and I in turn tried to be creative using his.

Before pictures; a window that would soon be a door and a garage door that soon would be a wall with a window (with a room behind it).  

 A Look inside Garage bay number one.. Which would soon be transformed... 

The bay is going to be a room for living in, a primary hang-out room with a day bed, T.V and gas stove, it was a bit cramped so I suggested we go up a little with the ceiling and give the room a bit more character, the owner liked the look of wood and we built an idea off of that. The picture to the right is the pantry window, which I turned into a doorway...
 

From window to door, keeping in mind that although this looks quick and easy, the wall is about 2 inches out of plumb, so I ordered extra wide pre-hung steel door units to compensate for the difference.

                                                                               Trying to think ahead is a big part of any project, imagine the finish result and work backwards in your head, this can avoid many potential problems. This job went smoothly, but a lot of planning made it so.

  Tongue and groove is the covering du jour and I used three widths for this project. Next up are the finishing touches. A re-cycled stained glass window, door installations, trim details and extras.

  The closet was an extra, and by simply joining two pieces of 3/4" plywood together the walls were formed without using studs or taking up much extra room in either the garage or the finished room. I only did this here because the closet was roughly 24"x24", any larger and it would require framing.  A stove has been installed as well as more artwork, so I need to pop by and grab some more pics.
