Design

This page is a memorial I designed for Kitty Madeira. I spent a bit of time reading about her life, looking through photo albums and after long talks with her husband Jay, worked up a design creating a community space in her honor.

First Universalist Church in Yarmouth Maine, proposed site for community space.

Construction took place in David Sprague's workshop, a beautiful place to work, I learned a lot from him. I recently heard that the shop and house burned down, I can only imagine what a loss that was for him and his family.

Lower carcass of corner cabinet with interior baffles for support.

Upper cabinet shelves- all shop grade white birch plywood.

The memorial was also created to provide a space for social activities. The room was divided into sections or places for different groups to get together, either at the same time or separately. I wanted this cabinet at the center with the top space glassed in for Kitty and items that were special to her. The rest was for community use.

The Bookcase was also to be divided up for all ages, paperbacks, childrens picture books, and probably a few Reader's Digest large print condensed novels.

This is the space as it looked before cushions were added and beautiful floral murals (painted by Beth Newman) I didn't pick out the paint colors, but it does grow on you after a while. The seven drawers have curved fronts to match the exsisting window.

Details from floor to chair rail.

The night before the "grand opening" I had to go flying around to get carpet runners, a 10x10 Persian rug, a small round coffee table, and other assorted items to add a little sense of coziness. Thought it was pretty funny that we almost missed the grand opening due to daylight savings time.
